DOC Orcia, the most beautiful wine in the world

In a Land That’s a World Heritage Site, a Wine Is Born That’s Not Only Good—but Beautiful

A beauty that speaks of love, tradition, and quality.

The landscape of the Val d’Orcia is marked by gentle rolling hills and expansive vineyards—long, geometric lines that stretch across the countryside and capture the eye. Uniting this entire region is the production of a high-quality wine that’s a constant presence on local tables: Orcia DOC.

Primarily made from the Sangiovese grape, Orcia DOC is more than just a red wine. It represents the deep bond between the winemakers and their land, and it also comes in other varieties: Orcia Rosato, Orcia Bianco (made with Trebbiano Toscano grapes), and Orcia Vin Santo, the latter a sweet wine perfect at the end of a meal, traditionally paired with local desserts.

The Controlled Designation of Origin (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) was granted on Valentine’s Day of the year 2000, almost as if to tell the story of the winemakers’ love for their work and its fruits. That love lives on in their determination to protect this treasure of the land—a responsibility taken on by the Orcia Wine Consortium.

The best time to discover Orcia DOC—often called the most beautiful wine in the world—is during the Orcia Wine Festival, an annual celebration of the region’s wine culture. Tastings and wine samplings, as well as guided tours of wineries and vineyards, offer a full immersion into Val d’Orcia’s wine world. The event takes place in San Quirico d’Orcia, the picturesque village that hosts it.

Tasting the wines and flavors of Val d’Orcia is an extraordinary experience, the perfect way to end a day spent exploring a land so unique it has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After wandering the alleys of historic villages, walking a stretch of the Via Francigena, or cycling along romantic white roads (strade bianche), there’s nothing better than sitting down to a meal and continuing your journey—this time through the traditional gastronomy of a land that knows how to tell its story.
