Pienza

A city born from a unified vision of beauty.

Set on a hill, the ideal city of the Renaissance takes its name from Pius II, who was behind its creation. Enea Silvio Piccolomini, a leading figure of Humanism who became pope under the name Pius II decided to transform his birthplace, the fortified medieval village of Corsignano. In 1459 he entrusted its design to the Florentine architect Bernardo Gambarelli known as “Il Rossellino,” a follower of the great architect Leon Battista Alberti. A rare example of urban planning on a human scale was realized, centered on the monumentality of the main square, Piazza Pio II, around which the major buildings were arranged: the Cathedral, the Palazzo Piccolomini, the Palazzo Borgia, and the Palazzo Comunale.

The town still retains its original stylistic unity, identifying itself as one of the most significant architectural achievements of the humanistic ideals of the 15th century, and for this reason the historic center has been on the World Heritage List since 1996. A few kilometers from Pienza, built on a hill from which there is a vast panorama, is the village of Monticchiello. On the valley floor the fortified castle of Spedaletto and north of Pienza the Monastery of Sant’Anna in Camprena.

Alleys with romantic names and breathtaking views in the “ideal city,” a dream location in which to pledge eternal love.

With the perfection of its forms, recognition as a World Heritage Site and an inherently romantic appeal, Pienza gives couples a promise of eternal love.
The civil rite to seal that promise takes place in the historic venue of the Town Hall, overlooking Pius II Square, the beating heart of the “ideal city” designed by Rossellino.
All around, the panorama of the Val d’Orcia opens up in breathtaking views, the perfect backdrop for immortalizing the newlyweds on their most beautiful day, for example on the Belvedere on Via del Casello, along the Via dell’Amore or Via Santa Caterina.
The romantic alleys of Pienza-such as the Via del Bacio-disappear into the countryside to make way for locations of compelling historical charm, such as the fortified castles of Spedaletto and Monticchiello, from which there are exceptional views of the valley, the perfect setting for any photograph.
