Tuscany is a land of “Rare Places,” of “unique places.” The undulating inland plateau of the Val d’Orcia and the large, fertile Maremma plain, fail to unite, have no continuity; they are separated by the junction between the slopes of Mount Amiata, the highest mountain in southern Tuscany, and the slopes of the Montalcino relief.
The Orcia River, in seeking an outlet toward the sea, toward the Tuscan Maremma, at the point of contact between the two hills has carved out the deep Orcia Gorges, where it also receives the contribution of the Asso, a small but fascinating stream that comes from the Crete Senesi.
On this site, today, stands the Rossello farm, in the municipality of Castiglione, immersed in the Val d’Orcia Artistic-Natural Park, recently declared a UNESCO “World Heritage Site” for its naturalistic and scenic diversity.
