San Quirico d’Orcia
A historic village crossed by the Via Francigena.
In the heart of the Val d’Orcia, nestled in a landscape that gathers together some of the icons that represent Tuscany and Italy in the world, such as the cypress grove, the Vitaleta Chapel and the Belvedere farm hill, lies San Quirico d’Orcia, a town of Etruscan origins.
Crossed by the Via Francigena, the village developed from the Middle Ages around the Pieve d’Osenna, hence the ancient name of San Quirico in Osenna. The historic center has a city wall that preserves most of the fourteen towers, within which are some architectural monuments of the highest value: the Collegiate Church dedicated to Saints Quirico and Giulitta; the imposing Palazzo Chigi then Zondadari built by Cardinal Flavio Chigi to the design of the architect, a pupil of Bernini, Carlo Fontana; the Horti Leonini, built in the 16th century, by Diomede Leoni represent a fine example of an Italian garden; and the charming church of Santa Maria Assunta.
South of San Quirico, along the route of the Via Francigena, dominated by the tower of the Amerighi, is the village of Vignoni and, nearby, Bagno Vignoni, a charming and renowned spa known and frequented already by the Romans.
